On Saturday, April 21, 2018 approximately 450 families and community
members gathered at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park to participate in CVASA’s 4th Annual Autism Walk to promote autism awareness and
raise funds for CVASA programs and services.

Participants completed a 1.5k walk through the park’s beautiful green scenic sidewalk trail in honor of their loved ones living with autism.

This year also marked the 20 Year Anniversary for CVASA serving the
autism community in the Coachella Valley. CVASA was honored to receive
the following recognition.

Certificate of Congressional Recognition_ by Raul Ruiz, M.D., Member
of the U.S. House of Representatives California Congressional District
36, 115th Congress. Board of Supervisors Proclamation Recognition from V. Manuel Perez, Supervisor, Fourth District. Lastly, CVASA was honored with an Assembly Resolution by the California Legislature presented by the honorable Eduardo Garcia, 56th Assembly District.

In addition, CVASA honored one of the organizations founding members,
Leah Devulder, with the “Piece of the Puzzle” award for her role in
empowering those impacted by autism in the Coachella Valley for over
20 years! Leah is still an active advocate in the community and serves
on the DSUSD Special Education Parent Advisory Committee.

The event raised over $11,000 through donations, Team Fundraising, and
raffles. All proceeds will be used to help provide our valuable
programs and services to children and individuals on the autism
spectrum in the Coachella Valley.

Team Santi, was our 2018 top Team Fundraiser bringing in $1,013 in
online donations and pledges. Over 20 team members, including
employees from Jensen’s Finest Foods store in Palm Desert, walked in
support of Santiago Mercado.

This years Top Individual Fundraiser was Kian Arujo
of Team Red Panda Rocks. Kian raised over $900 dollars in pledges
alone in support of his nephew Gavin Hernandez. This is Kian’s second
year in a row as top individual fundraiser!

Michaela Munds, 15 years old, of Indio. Michaela is connected to
Autism by living with someone on the spectrum and also by volunteering
with CARD – Center for Autism & Related Disorders.
